STATEMENT: COUNCIL SIGNS TEMPORARY LEASE ON FORMER CHESIRE HOME
AS FAMILY HUB FOR 17 FAMILIES:
The Housing Department has secured a 12 month lease on Richmond House in Monkstown for the purpose of providing supported emergency accommodation for families experiencing homelessness. The Council, along with the other Dublin Local Authorities and the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive are currently dealing with an unprecedented demand for supported family accommodation across the Dublin region and we are pleased to be playing our part in securing this much needed accommodation.

Staff in the Housing Department have been working continuously to identify and secure additional, suitable accommodation over the past number of months. With Richmond House (17 units) and Millmount Court (12 units) we have now secured a total of 29 additional family accommodation units this year, thereby doubling the total number of family units in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown since the beginning of the year. The accommodation provided will be far more appropriate to the needs of the families than that available in commercial hotels. Families placed in this accommodation will have secure own door accommodation with cooking and laundry facilities available to them along with communal recreation space. Other supports will also be available for families to assist them to move on to other housing options, as they become available.

Richmond House previously operated as supported residential accommodation for people with disabilities and only requires minor works to make it ready for the families that will be accommodated there. We expect it to be available for use in November, ensuring that up to 17 families will not be placed in hotel accommodation during the Christmas period.
