It js a great honour, as An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to represent the Council on the Dún Laoghaire Harbour's Bicentenary Steering Group.
The group was established in mid-November 2016 and its key aim is to develop a comprehensive and fitting programme of events to celebrate the 200th anniversary of one of Ireland's most iconic, historical and significant pieces of public open space. The harbour began being built on May 31st 1817 when the laying of the first stone was done which began one of the world’s finest man-made harbours. It was originally known as “The Royal Harbour of King George 1V at Kingstown” and provided shelter and safety to maritime vessels or all types.
The Programme of the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Bicentenary Steering Group is currently being developed and we would welcome suggestions from interested parties on how best to commemorate this magnificant piece of public infrastructure.
The steering group consists of members from; Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the Pavilion Theatre, the RNLI, the Coal Harbour Users Group, The National Maritime Museum, Dalkey Heritage Centre, a representative of the 4 Yacht Clubs, the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company and Dun Laoghaire Business Improvement District (BID)..
