Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has voted to maintain the 15% reduction in the Local Property Tax (LPT).

Welcoming the decision Cllr. Cormac Devlin said “the Local Property Tax is based on the valuation of homes, given the cost of property in the capital, homeowners in Dublin face much higher bills than elsewhere in the country. City and county councils have the power to vary their LPT rate by +/- 15%”

“I am pleased that Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has agreed to maintain a 15% reduction of the Local Property Tax. Fianna Fáil have consistently pushed for the maximum reduction of the LPT since its introduction in 2013. The 15% reduction results in a modest saving of about €100 for the average homeowner.”

Fianna Fáil were joined by similar motions from Fine Gael and People Before Profit who also put forward motions to reduce the tax by 15%, while the Labour Party councillors sought to have it reduced by just 10%.

Citing a note of caution Cllr. Devlin continued, “The Local Property Tax (LPT) is based on home valuations that have not been updated since 2013. Another valuation update is due in November 2019, and many homes will see increases in their liabilities because of rising property prices.”

“If the government and their representatives are serious about giving hard-pressed homeowners a break they will use the upcoming budget to reform the LPT regime before the tax is automatically hiked in 2019” concluded Cllr. Devlin.
