Re :   Dalkey 'DART' Station - Proposed Footpath Widening Scheme on Bridge/Installation of Traffic Light Signals -  Traffic Flow 'Shuttle'

The 'Traffic Section' of the Council is proposing to widen the existing 800mm footpath on the East Side of the Bridge to 1500mm and to widen the existing footpath on Railway Road ( from the 'Dart' Station to the Bridge ) to 1800mm, in order to provide 'Wheelchair Access' from Dalkey Village (and Platform 1) to Platform 2 (Citybound Trains) and the residential area of Ardeevin Road and Cunningham Road and vice versa.

In order to maintain pedestrian and wheelchair use of this proposed new widened footpath on the East Side of the Bridge, it is necessary to install a 'Shuttle System' of two-way traffic flow across the bridge controlled by 'permanent traffic light signals'.

Vehicle detector loops will be installed in the roadway on both approaches for the efficient operation of the traffic signals and a radar vehicle detector will be installed opposite the driveway at the house on Ardeevin Road just prior to the bridge.

Note that there is an existing wheelchair ramp linking Platform 2 to Ardeevin Road and Iarnrod Eireann do not have any plans to install lifts.

The above footpath widening/Traffic Light 'Shuttle' scheme has been designed by the 'Traffic Section' of the Council in conjunction with Iarnrod Eireanne (Irish Rail)/CIE -  and all design details have been agreed. The proposed scheme is being fully funded by the 'National  Disability Strategy' Fund - Roads and Footpaths.

Site Work will commence on Monday 22nd November 2010 and will take two weeks to complete.
