TEMPORARY REMOVAL OF FAMOUR DÚN LAOGHAIRE SCULPTURE:

The Council has advised the public that one of the most prominent and best known sculptures in Dún Laoghaire, Andrew O'Connor's Christ the King, was carefully taken down to facilitate the construction of the Central Library and Cultural Centre at Moran Park.

The work was completed with great care and attention under the direction of the Arts Office of DLR and the statue was transported to the Parks Depot in Cabinteely for safekeeping. The Council will also avail of the opportunity to oversee any necessary repairs and cleaning, in readiness for the statue’s re-erection in Moran Park, once construction works have been completed in under 2 years time.

The "Triple Cross" of Christ the King, symbolising the three distinct aspects of Christ's life - Desolation, Consolation and Triumph – has been standing 18 feet high as a major landmark for the town, since it was formally unveiled in 1978.

The Council would like to inform the public that the statue of Christ the King will be re-erected on the western end of the Moran Park site in a position of equal prominence to its original location and at the same height above ground level. Its new location has been chosen to reflect its cultural status in what will be a reconfigured and upgraded Moran Park.
