Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown are proceeding with the protection/stabilisation works to the beach access at Corbawn Lane, Shankill, Co. Dublin, and to some 180 metres of cliff to the north of the access. Works started on site on 10th December 2018. It is good news that these essential works are progressing and that, separately, plans are progressing in relation to environmental and coastal protection measures at the old Bray landfill.
During the Corbawn Lane Beach Access works it will not be possible to use the present access, and, depending on tide levels, it may not be possible to travel along the beach past the works.
The proposed works, in summary, include:
· Underpinning the existing access structure.
· Protecting the base of the cliff in the immediate vicinity of the access structure using rock armour and a concrete wing wall.
· Stabilising the cliff adjacent to the access structure (with soil nailing).
· Placing rock armour protection to the base of the cliff for some 180 metres north of the access structure.
As a result, it is proposed that Corbawn Lane Beach Access will be closed to the public from the 10th of December 2018 for approximately 6 months. The closure is required to facilitate the above repairs and protection works to the beach access and adjacent cliff faces.
The restrictions will mean that the public who access the beach at other locations such as the Shanganagh Wastewater Treatment Plant, Quinn’s Road and Woodbrook, will not be able to use the Corbawn Lane access to exit the beach and may not be able to travel along the beach past the works at some stages of the tide. Appropriate health and safety plans and warning signage will be in place in the vicinity of the works.
The contractor will be permitted to use a section of the south of the green area in front of Seafield as a secure site compound for storage of plant and materials during the works and will be required to reinstate the space to its original condition on completion of the works.
Information on the works will be communicated to the public via our website and social media channels and there will also be a letter drop to adjacent residents in the coming days.
