It has emerged that Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is actively considering the closure of Sallynoggin Library in its budget for 2010. The announcement came in an email from the County Manager Owen Keegan to local Councillors recently.
Local Councillor for the area, Cormac Devlin (Fianna Fail) has described the move as “completely unacceptable” and said “Sallynoggin Library is an important resource for the 10,000 plus residents living in the area. The library is located in direct proximity to two primary schools, a second level college and the Sallynoggin College of Further Education.”
“In addition to book lending services, the library provides free internet access and is a vital information resource for local residents and students alike”. According to Cllr. Devlin, “the 2006 Census recorded that Sallynoggin had one of the lowest rates of home internet access in the county. This underlines the importance of the facility to the local community.”
Cllr. Devlin continued, “obviously in the current economic climate savings have to be made across all departments of the County Council. However the closure of an entire facility is completely unacceptable. I have written to the County Manager expressing my opposition to the plans and I am also calling on the Fine Gael and Labour Party Councillors, who control the County Council, to vote against this proposal and protect a vital resource for the community in Sallynoggin.”
