Ireland's third EU beach clean-up will take place along Seapoint Beach on Sunday 12th May at 2pm. All invidividuals, residents / community groups and organisations are invited to participate.
Each year nearly 20 million tonnes of waste is discharged into our oceans. 50% of all marine litter is single-use plastics like drink bottles, crisp packets and cigarette butts. The public are being asked to come along and help clean up the beach. All necessary equipment will be supplied on the day.
#EUBeachCleanUp
* On average 20 million tonnes of waste are discharged into our oceans on an annual basis, all of human origin.
* There have been approximately 11,000 clean-ups across Europe since they first began in 1996.
The majority of marine litter is generated on land. They
are from land-based activities and are carried into the marine environment via rivers, sanitation networks and wind. Marine based human activity (such as fishing, shellfish/fish
farming, shipping) also generates waste.
The #EUBeachCleanUp takes place on the same day across the EU. It is organised for local residents, groups and organisations to combine their efforts to try and collect rubbish and hazardous materials before they enter our oceans. Like all environmental steps, everyone playing their part locally, helps globally.
