"NO SAFE CROSSING FOR RESIDENTS
ALONG JOHNSTOWN ROAD" - DEVLIN

Residents in the various estates off Johnstown Road are all too familiar with the continues problem of trying to cross this busy road. At this months Area Committee meeting, your local Fianna Fáil Councillor Cormac Devlin raised the issue while receiving support from his party colleague Councillor Larry Butler (Ballybrack LEA):
The following Motion was proposed by Councillor Cormac Devlin and seconded by Councillor Larry Butler:
That this Council would install as a matter of urgency a pedestrian crossing along Johnstown Road. At present there is no safe place for people to cross the road from the junction of Johnstown Road and Rochestown Avenue to the entrance of Pottery Road. Local residents (particularly children) cross through heavy and dangerous traffic to get to the shops. A pedestrian crossing must be put in place to ensure that they are safe when doing so.
The following report of the Manager was considered:
Development on Johnstown Road is almost exclusively located on the southern side of the road. Shops and Medical Centre are also on this side of the road. The result of this is that there is little need for pedestrians to cross Johnstown Road between Pottery Road and Rochestown Avenue.
It is unlikely that a warrant for the provision of pedestrian signals would be reached as only the occupants of 2 – 3 cul-de-sacs would have need to cross the road.
Following discussion it was agreed that a pedestrian count would be carried out. The report was noted.
UPDATE (February 2006):
A pedestrian count was undertaken in December 2005 on Johnstown Road. Pedestrian numbers were extremely low - the highest hourly total being 13 pedestrians. The count took in any pedestrians crossing between Oakdale and Granitefield. Based on these numbers, the provision of a pedestrian crossing could not be justified. A further count will be carried out in the event of significant development on the western side of Johnstown Road.
The crossing at the Rochestown Avenue junction will be addressed as part of the Rochestown Avenue Quality Bus Corridor that will be designed by the Quality Bus Network Project Office.
