DEVLIN WELCOMES
EU-WIDE BAN ON
DOG & CAT FUR:
Dun Laoghaire based Councillor and ISPCA member; Cormac Devlin has welcomed the news that from January 2009 onwards, no goods sold or imported into the European Union will contain fur from dogs and cats.
“This long awaited ban on these furs has been brought into force by the European Commission and should be welcomed. For many years some manufactures have sold these types of furs as imitations for other animals furs. I’m glad to say that this practice will now be illegal and halted by the EU. We now must ensure that implementation of this law is enforced.” stated Cllr. Devlin.
The European Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou said "I am delighted that this measure is now in force, so that European consumers can be confident that they will no longer be at risk of inadvertently purchasing products containing cat or dog fur. This ban reflects the profound attachment that Europeans have to cats and dogs as companion animals only, and their total rejection of this appalling practice."
