DEVLIN QUESTIONS COUNCIL'S
PARK & RIDE FACILITIES
March 2005
With an ever growing number of cars using our roads there is a serious need for local authorities to provide Park & Ride services in their areas. Despite massive investment in the public transport network by Fianna Fáil in Government, local authorities need to play their role in providing improved services and initiatives. Councillor Devlin placed the following question down at an Area Meeting:
Question:
To ask the Manager what plans are in place to encourage commuters to use a Park & Ride facility in the Dún Laoghaire side of our County?
Reply:
At present the Council have car parks at the DART at Killiney Station area, Sandycove/Glasthule Station, Salthill/Monkstown Station (managed at present by Iarnrod Eireann), and Blackrock Station. In addition Iarnrod Eireann have car parks at Dalkey Station and Booterstown.
On the LUAS there are Park and Ride facilities funded by the Railway Procurement Agency at Sandyford Station, Stillorgan Station and Balally Station on Line B (Green Line). On Line B1 there are proposals for a Park and Ride facility at Carrickmines and on Line B2 at Woodbrook at the proposed new DART Station.
Subject to funding it is proposed to review the issue of Park and Ride facilities with the DTO, Iarnrod Eireann and the RPA and the sort of issues that will /may be included in this review are: -
·Discouragement of short car trips
·Charging policy
·Magnitude of provision/demand management
·Whether multi storey or surface
·Optimum locations
·Feeder bus links
·Interchange facilities
·Security
·Safe routes (through housing areas etc)
