- Devlin selected to contest election in the Dún Laoghaire constituency -
Fianna Fáil Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Councillor and former Cathaoirleach, Cormac Devlin who has been selected to contest the general election in Dún Laoghaire, has said that "it is time for fresh thinking to restore confidence in politics".
Up to 200 members and supporters gathered in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dublin for the patry's selection convention chaired by Senator Gerry Horkan.
The convention was contested by councillors Cormac Devlin, Kate Feeney and former minister Mary Hanafin. Cllr. Devlin topped the poll with Cllr. Feeney coming in second place while Cllr. Hanafin came third.
Speaking following his nomination, Cllr Devlin thanked both Kate Feeney and Mary Hanafin for putting themselves forward at convention and particularly party members for placing their trust in him to secure a seat for Fianna Fáil in the constituency.
“It is a great honour and privilege to be selected at convention. I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all those who have supported me.
“The message from the public is clear; this Government is failing. It is failing to deliver on housing, on an efficient health service and failing in the very basic administration of Government.
“Homelessness has consistently increased under this Taoiseach, pensioners are being left to go blind for the want of a 20 minute operation, while the department of justice has been allowed run amuck.
“It is clear that we need a change and at the next election, whenever it comes, the choice is clear. A Taoiseach addicted to spin who seems more interested in the colour of his socks than the good administration of Government, or Michéal Martin who has demonstrated ability and cool leadership. I know my choice.
He concluded, “Communities across this constituency have huge potential and have so much to offer our capital when supported and resourced. I am determined to renew confidence in the belief that adequate solutions to Ireland’s social and economic issues can be found.”

Subsequently, Fianna Fáil made an addition to the ticket and Cllr Mary Hanafin was added. Commenting on this decision, Cormac Devlin said "it was a privilege to be selected by the members of Dún Laoghaire Fianna Fáil as their candidate for the next general election. I welcome the early finalisation of our icket. Undoubtedly, Kate Feeney will be disappointed with the decision, especially given her strong performance at the selection convention. However, I am certain she will continue to make an important contribution to the party into the future. I look forward to contesting the general election when it occurs. In the meantime, I remain focused on working across the constituency to represent the people of Dún Laoghaire." commented Cllr. Devlin.
