Local Councillor, Cormac Devlin has today welcomed the announcement by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council that the long awaited Glasthule Flood Relief works are due to commence and will last until mid September.
Cllr. Devlin said "for many years residents and businesses alike have struggled with the constant fear of flooding to their premises and hopefully once these works have been completed, this will alleviate that fear".
The Council have stated that a small area at the end of Newtownsmith walkway will be closed off to pedestrians and approximately 6 car parking spaces will be used to access the working area by the Contractor.
As you will no doubt be aware that several premises in Glasthule Village have experienced flooding over the past number of years, principally caused by the ‘overloading’ of the drainage system that links the Village with the West Pier Pump Station.
This ‘overloading’ occurs only during periods of intense rainfall. During these intense downpours, manholes on the drainage system ‘pop’ and significant volumes of rainwater and some foul water spill out. This overflow proceeds overland, down the Link Road, and out to sea via a 400mm pipe located beside the ‘Piano’ monument.
In order to substantially reduce the risk of flooding in Glasthule Village, we commissioned a detailed analysis of the local drainage system, which was recently completed by a Consulting Engineer. The recommended short-term solution is to construct a high level emergency overflow in Newtownsmith Green close to the Dún Laoghaire Baths. This arrangement will connect an overflow pipe to an existing manhole on Newtownsmith Green. The overflow pipe will lead directly to sea and will provide significant protection to the village. The overflow location is unobtrusive and the site will include a flow recorder to monitor spill quantities and durations.
